Each year the Chicago River turns a shade of green, and not just any green...Irish green. The green is identical to the greens of Ireland from where it received the name The Emerald Isle. In 1961, Stephen Bailey came in contact with a plumber who had green paint all over his white overalls. The green dye was used originally to detect leaks in the river. This revelation was the birth of the green Chicago River which only occurs every year during the Saint Patrick's Day Parade. To all you unbelievers who say it's not possible because the river is orange and not green...you just didn't have the patience and the faith needed to see the leprechauns waving their magic wands and turning the obnoxious orange dye into a beautiful Irish green. The river will be transformed at 10:00am on Saturday, March 12, 2011. The best place to see this wonderful creation will be between Columbus and Wabash.
